Mushroom baby gnomes

Bigger is not always better; gnomes and dwarfs are often more interesting than giants.

Zest, 7 inch Natural Fibers Doll

I have been working hard on some magical babies these last 2 weeks but decided to keep their identity a secret until today. If you follow me on Instagram you can see some of the progress photos and some more process in the stories. I think only one person guessed these were going to be mushrooms. I thought they were going to be quicker to make since I was not going to make them any clothes really. However, I got excited with the details and as always I ended up spending so much time in them. I haven’t even finished their plushies. You will see them in my stories though. They are a gift from me so they don’t have to travel alone.

Now let me tell you a little more about these new babies. Every year I find Mushroom gnomes around where I live. They appear at different times of the year, as long as it is damp and hot, which means most of the time here. I have told their story many times over the years, but for the new people, and for those that need a reminder, I will explain one more time.

Mushroom gnomes have a very important job in the ecosystem. They are the ones that help mushrooms grow. You see when rain falls in a warm place, these little fellas whisper at the soil, around the trees, grass, and fallen leaves. They send magical sounds that awaken life around these things. This new life they awaken in the form of mushrooms is what decomposes organic debris and cycles all the nutrients back to the soil. This will then help other plants grow. Without mushroom gnomes we wouldn’t have such beautiful, healthy plants and trees. However, right now, these are just babies and they are not very good with their powers yet. They tend to grow more fungi on themselves than on the ground. And while they are still learning is better to keep them inside where we can control what they do a little better, while they learn to control their powers.

They, like actual mushrooms, are gender neutral, so I guess you can decide if you call them he or she, or something else. If you adopt them you can also decide when you let them go outside though I recommend you go slowly and watch them carefully. I warn you, they are masters of diguise and you can loose them easily since they will hide under their mushroom hats and get lost with the foliage.

Zest, 7 inch Natural Fibers Doll

Now meet Baby Zest. Zest is a sweet but rather shy baby. This baby enjoys eating berries and loves listening to birds sing. Zest is a very cautious child and gets startled very easily. You need to go easy, but no worries, in a couple of days this baby will warm up to you and give you more headaches and love than you have ever known.

Baby Zest is a 7 inch natural fibers baby doll. Skin is DWE in beige color. White spots and freckles have been painted with fabric paint. The brown freckles were painted with a micron pen. Limbs and torso are firmly filled with clean wool. Head is not floppy but a little wobbly. Legs and arms are floppy on the shoulders and thighs. Arms are sewn directly to the torso three times for extra strength. Legs and torso are one piece. The head is firmly needle felted, soft sculpted, and hand embroidered with DMC cotton embroidery floss. Zest’s hair is a wild brushable mohair wig cap in red brown color. It has been hand sewn to the head. This hair can be gently brushed and styled. The embroidery on the body has also been made with DMC cotton floss. Gnome ears are hand sewn to the head. The doll is fully soft sculpted but not anatomically correct because it is meant to be a gender neutral doll. Blushing was made with an orange/red beeswax crayon and it is not permanent. You will get a little piece of cloth with some blush so you can retouch it if necessary.

Salvia, 7 inch Natural Fibers Doll

We can now meet Salvia. This baby is the extroverted one for sure. Always babbling, always exploring, always making you worry something is going to happen because Salvia does not know fear whatsoever. Some of Salvia’s favorite things are those thin strips of light coming through the branches of a thick canopy of trees, rain, and of course frogs. Salvia says they are the happiest because they are always jumping around.

Moss, 7 inch Natural Fibers Doll

Last but not least we have Moss. This is the sleepy sort of lazy gnome we all know. I don’t know if this is just how it is or like normal babies is just a phase. The good thing is that this baby is super easy to take care of. As long as it is dark and warm, Moss will sleep most of the day and night also. Only waking up to eat some veggies every now and then, Moss seems to enjoy dreamland more than real life. I’m sure this will change in time, fingers crossed.

These babies will go home with a diaper, a hand crocheted mushroom hat, a cotton lace collar with button closure, and a mushroom plushie (not in the photos). All items handmade by me.

If you would like to see more photos of the babies, you can do so here.

These babies are spot clean only.

These dolls have been made as sturdy as possible but their outfits includes buttons that can pose as choking hazard for little kids. That is why these dolls are for adults and children 5 years or older that do not mouth their toys and can be gentle with the dolls.
