Mushroom babies have reappeared in our garden.

“ The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”

-W.B. Yeats

I hope everyone is well and healthy these days. I have been trying to enjoy summer, though I must say it has been pretty confusing. Is not only summer here, is also hurricane season. That means, is hot for most of the day but there are also thunder storms, and lots of rain. We haven’t gotten a full hurricane yet, and I hope we don’t get it. We have been enjoying making paper boats, and splashing in puddles though. It’s the simple things.

All this rain and hot weather made me think of magical mushroom babies. I have been missing making some magical babies over here, so they could have not come at a better moment. I remember last year I also found a baby mushroom. This time around I was even luckier since I found not one but two.

I am not sure if these babies are related to each other or not. However, this time I am more prepared and I know what to expect. You see, Mushroom gnomes help plants and fungi grow by aiding them to absorb water and minerals. Baby mushroom gnomes can be a little difficult to take care of because they cannot always control their powers. They make everything they touch grow so I am really happy that at least one of them sleeps a lot.

Another thing you may not know about these little creatures is that they are born from the ground and hide under big mushroom hats to hide from predators. Is rare to find one, so finding two is a miracle. I made them some clothes and bedding so they can be warm but they need new homes. I have a cat and a dog at home so I am scared these babies will not survive here.

I want you to meet Lluvia. She’s the first one we found in the garden. We were moving some wood out of the way to make space in our backyard, and a little red something ran away. I immediately knew it was a mushroom gnome. We followed her and she went directly to the other mushroom baby. I think she was trying to protect him. She seems to be the older one or maybe just the protective one. Once she realized we were not going to harm them, she jumped on my hand and hugged my arm. She has been a delight to take care of. She’s very helpful and even though she can’t control her powers completely, she notices right away when she touches things, so she usually catches herself before things start growing out of proportions.

Lluvia seems to like blackberries, being out in the sun, and jumping, she jumps all the time. I made her some clothes so she wouldn’t go home naked. She mixes and matches everything and loves to show the clothes around. I’m guessing she likes the clothes.

Lluvia is a natural fibers art doll 7 inches tall. Her skin is Heavy weight Laib Yala in a dark brown color. Her body has been stuffed with clean carded wool and her torso has been lightly needle felted. Her head has been made in the classic Waldorf style with some needle felting to make it firmer. The head is not as floppy as my other dolls mostly because of her size. Her legs and torso are one piece but the legs can bend to help her sit and pose. Her arms have been hand sewn to her torso three times for extra strength. . Her lavender eyes have been hand embroidered with DMC cotton embroidery floss. Lluvia’s hair is a brunnette big loop mohair crocheted wig cap that has been hand sewn to her head. This style of hair cannot be brushed. She has a sculpted belly button and a cute little tushie.

Lluvia will go home with all the clothes and accessories you see in her photos made by me.

  • Cloth diaper with ribbon
  • White romper with hand embroidered details.
  • Hand crocheted booties
  • Hand crocheted mushroom hat
  • Green cotton gauze dress
  • Green cotton gauze diaper cover
  • Hand crocheted green, red, and beige cardigan
  • Hand crocheted basket
  • Mushroom plushie
  • Leaf blanket

Copal is the sleepy baby boy. I think he’s younger and that is why he sleeps so much. I haven’t been able to get a good photo of him awake unless is of his back or just a blur of him jumping and running. When he’s awake, he just can’t stand still. He loves to play with Lluvia and his playis so intense that I think that contributes to him just falling asleep right after.

Copal loves guavas the most. He also loves sleeping, playing, and is not a big fan of the sun like Lluvia is. I think he wants to be mostly in the dark so he can sleep better. I made some clothes for him too but I feel he couldn’t care less about them. hahaha! I love how they turned out though. I hope you like them too.

Copal is a 7 inch natural fibers art doll. His skin is DWE in a red brown color. His body has been stuffed with clean carded wool and lightly needle felted. His head has been made in the classic Waldorf style with some needle felting to make it firmer. The head is not as floppy as my other dolls mostly because of his size. His legs and torso are one piece but the legs can bend to help him sit and pose. His arms have been hand sewn to his torso three times for extra strength. . His sleeping eyes have been hand embroidered with DMC cotton embroidery floss. Copal’s hair is a blonde wild brushable mohair crocheted wig cap that has been hand sewn to his head. This style of hair can be gently brushed. He has a sculpted belly button and a cute little tushie.

These dolls are made to be as sturdy as possible but some of their clothes and accessories are more delicate. That is the main reason they are considered art dolls.

Lluvia and Copal are not toys for small children. They are meant to be played only by children 7 and up that do not mouth their toys anymore and can play with their clothes gently. Their clothes have snaps and buttons that can become choking hazards to small children.

Copal will go home with all the clothes and accessories you see in his photos made by me.

  • White cotton lace collar
