Celeste and her dinosaur

Girls like dinosaurs too.

How is life treating you all? Are you enjoying the warm weather yet? We got lots of sun and not enough water. It really hasn’t rained for over a month already. As I am writing this it feels like it might rain but it may be the weather just taunting us. It’s pretty hot but we manage. We have been bringing more plants into the house each day. We have been creating our own inside jungle. We also started planting trees in the back yard. This house had none. That is something I do miss about our house in Tulum, so many trees.

I work with the AC on most of the day because it’s impossible to work on wooly babies while sweating. So in my nice and cold studio, surrounded by plants, wool, fabric, and love, sweet little Celeste came to life.

When I first met her, I thought she was a boy. I even started designing some boyish clothes and all. I mean, this doll was only interested in balls, cars, and dinosaurs, especially dinosaurs. All of these things we have been made to believe are for boys. So there I was with all my preconceptions and prejudices, thinking this sweet baby girl was a boy, when all of a sudden she wanted to wear the bonnet with the ruffle and not the boy one. Now I was confused, again. Is it a boy or is it girl? I put the bonnet on her head and she finally whispered her name to me. At that moment the picture of my daughter wearing a princess dress with butterfly wings while playing with cars came to my mind. Of course girls like balls too, and cars, and dinosaurs. I actually remember my daughter telling me her favorite animals where unicorns and dinosaurs. So yes, this girl, loves dinosaurs. Why was that so hard to believe in the first place? Silly Aubrey…

Celeste likes bows and ruffles, little girl shoes, and pastel colors too. She looks so adorable wearing her sweet outfits while playing with Azul, her dinosaur. She named him of course. She looooves him and the poor thing is not allowed to leave her side. She even wants to take him into the bathtub with her. I just prop him in a place where she can see him but he won’t get wet. So be ready to do the same if you adopt her.

Some things you should know about her…well, her favorite color is blue, she loves oatmeal and tamarinds, not together of course. Though we haven’t tried them together. It may be a new thing to try. She can roar for hours as part of her pretending to be a dinosaur play. She says that’s how she can play with Azul. She takes the longest baths because she loves to play with water and she has no problem sleeping by herself, though if you sleep next to her she will definitely snuggle up with you.

Celeste is a 12 inch natural fibers baby doll. Her skin is Laib Yala in light brown color, she’s firmly stuffed with clean wool. Her torso has been needle felted. Her head is floppy and needs to be supported, just like a real newborn baby.  Her legs and torso are one piece but the legs are floppy because of the way they have been sewn. They can also bend at the knees. Her arms have been sewn to her torso three times to make it extra strong. They are very floppy as well and bend at the elbow and wrist. Her head is made in the traditional Waldorf style with some needle felting to make it firmer. Her brown eyes have been hand embroidered with DMC cotton embroidery floss. Celeste’s hair is a big loop wild mohair crocheted into a wig cap with some loop crochet stitches to make her hair more wild. The crochet cap has been hand sewn to her head.

Celeste is a play doll for children 5 and up that do not mouth their toys anymore. Her clothes have snaps and buttons that can become choking hazards to small children.

Celeste is made to be as sturdy as possible. However, small children’s play should always be monitored. Never leave a small infant unattended with a stuffed toy.

Celeste will go home with the following clothes and accessories:

  • Handmade diaper with snaps.
  • Handmade shirt with button snaps.
  • Handmade romper with button snaps.
  • Head ribbon with handmade bow.
  • Hand crocheted mary janes made with a pattern by October Rose Dolls.
  • Handmade bonnet with ruffle.
  • Handmade sleep sack with snaps.
  • Hand crocheted hat with ear flaps.
  • Azul, her little dinosaur

If you would like to see more photos of her, you can see them here in her album

Here is also a little video of her getting changed into her sleeping clothes.
