The first blooms of Spring always make my heart sing.

Is it Spring time already where you live? I have read that a lot of places are still pretty cold. There is still snow covering some landscapes and Spring seems to be a little delayed this year. Here it feels like we skipped it really. It’s already summer for us really. The heat is intense, the sun is shining strong and everyone is trying to get to the beach. Still, we can see all the flowers blooming, so that’s how we know we are actually in Spring.

My new baby girl Aura is loving it. She can’t get enough of the flowers, bees, and butterflies. She wants to stop and smell every flower she can. She says they all smell sweet but different from each other. I guess she’s right.

Little Aura is a new kind of art doll for me. I have made many art dolls before, but she is a simpler design yet much more complex than the others, if that makes any sense.

What makes her simpler from my previous art dolls is that she is not fully soft sculpted. She doesn’t have fingers and toes, dimples on the knees or elbows, and she’s not anatomically correct. She does have a belly button and a cute little bum though.

What makes her more complex? Well, she does not only have a firmly needle felted face, she also has a needle felted body. And that is a new thing for me. It takes much more time and patience. Even though this is the first time I have done this, I’m happy to say I loved it and plan to do it with all my art dolls from now on.

Now let’s talk a little more about this spring baby girl. Did I mention she loves flowers? She actually made me add a big pocket to her overalls. Well, I kind of decided she needed it. You know, she’s always collecting little wild flowers and she just keeps them in her fist for hours. When she goes back to look at them they’re all squished and wilted. I figured if she had a pocket, a big one, to keep her flowers in, maybe she can enjoy them more. I also thought she would like some butterfly wings of her own. She can stare at butterflies for hours and she can spot them anywhere we go. When I started making these wings she decided to help, so I let her paint one side and I painted the other. I don’t think she knew what we were making because she made the sweetest surprise face when she saw them finished. I love that she loves them.

Her outfits are light and breezy because it’s seriously hot in here. I really enjoyed working on all the embroidery on her overalls and bonnet. It felt therapeutic in a way. I also learned a couple new stitches. She has a wool pixie bonnet, not very light I know. However, I feel all babies will do well with their heads covered, especially at night or when it’s raining. I also had to make her some wool crochet booties to match. And guess what her traveling friend is, a sweet butterfly baby doll which she adores. Yay!

Aura is a 14 inch natural fibers art baby doll. She was made slowly and thoughtfully putting attention to details. Her skin is DWE in red brown color, her limbs are firmly filled with clean wool. Her torso is weighted with glass beads and needle felted. Her head is floppy and needs to be supported at all times, just like a real newborn baby.  Her legs and torso are one piece but the legs are floppy because of the way they have been sewn. They can also bend at the knees. Her arms have been sewn to her torso three times to make it extra strong. They are very floppy as well and bend at the elbow. Her face is firmly needle felted, soft sculpted, and hand embroidered with DMC cotton embroidery floss. Aura’s hair is a black mohair wig hand sewn to her head. It can be gently brushed.

Aura is not a toy. She’s an art doll intended for gentle play by an adult collector. She likes to be cuddled and held but just like you would be gentle with a newborn baby, you need to be gentle to her. She feels great to hold too.

Aura will go home with all the clothes and accessories you see in her photos.

There is a short payment plan available to purchase her but make sure you ask first because the rules for payment plans have changed.
