A small change can make a big difference
So here is Miles, a big baby boy with some small changes.
I have always admired the work of artists like Jan Shackelford and Casie Brabham. I love how they can get such realistic looks on their baby dolls by painting the eyes and some of the other features. Now, I’m not very great at painting nor drawing, so this is definitely not an option for me. I can make some lines and circles and things that don’t need to be symmetrical, but having to make two eyes that look the same with just paint is just not possible for me. I also love the look of an embroidered face in a doll. For some reason, to me, embroidery gives them a sense of timelessness that a painted face does not.
I have been thinking for a long time how to make somewhat more realistic eyes with needle and thread. Of course, these eyes are not completely realistic but they do have more detail and in my opinion more life than the ones I made before. I hope you love them as much as I do. I also changed the way I make the ears on this one. Since it is an art doll why not make the ears separate from the head and then attach them to it. This gives me more control on their placement and I think I’m sticking to this for all my art dolls.
I can’t promise you I won’t change the eyes one more time in the future, but I will definitely play with this style for a while. Even though they are more work, I do love how they turned out.
Now, enough about all the technical stuff, let me tell you about Miles. Miles is a little shy baby boy. Being shy does not prevent him of being very loving though. He can be a little skittish at first but once he gets to know you, he will want to cuddle with you day and night, especially when he is sleepy. He’s definitely not one of those boys that can be put to sleep by himself. He needs human contact and warmth. I just want you to know this or else you’ll have a very fuzzy baby in your home. Aside from this, he’s a very low key baby. He loves his paci and a little plushie I made him, so of course he’s taking them to his new home.
If you have decided to adopt this baby. Yo probably would like to know that Miles is NOT a natural fibers art doll. He is not made with wool and is not a waldorf inspired doll. What he is is a newborn size soft sculpted Ooak baby boy doll approximately 18 inches long. His body is made out of organic cotton interlock fabric hand dyed to a blushed color. He is fully soft sculpted and anatomically correct. Miles has hand embroidered eyes and hair. His arms are hand sewn to his body (they are floppy) and the legs are string jointed three times with extra strong nylon thread for better movement. His head is attached with super strong nylon thread and then secured with a ladder stitch all around. The head is very floppy. You need to hold his head when you carry him, just like a real baby. He has a magnet inside his mouth so he can hold his magnetic pacifier. This baby boy doll is stuffed with soft polyester stuffing. He is lightly weighted with non colored craft sand in his torso, and head. Miles weights around 2 lbs. He fits into most newborn clothes and up to some 3 months old clothes.
