Alondra, a new kind of baby has been born

Alondra- 18 inch Natural Fibers Doll

Alondra is a completely new kind of baby. I have been admiring all my colleagues’ more realistic dolls for a long time now. However, I didn’t feel ready to try my hand at it until now. I decided to give a more realistic feel to a sleeping baby doll with Alondra. It’s true she is not as realistic as some of my fellow doll maker’s dolls are, but even though I wanted her to feel more realistic, I also wanted her to still look like a Chulona. So I think this is a good balance. Maybe in the future when my skills develop more, I will try and go full on realistic on doll or not. Who knows?

Making this sweet face was not an easy or quick job. It took me several days to felt her head to my liking. I especially found challenging needle felting the eyes and making them look somehow symmetric. Needless to say, I persevered and I am very happy with the results. I’m completely smitten by her, I even contemplated the idea of keeping her but I need to silence that part of my brain most of the time, or else I would just keep them all. haha!

Alondra’s body, like my previous art doll Bernardo, is needle felted in two parts to give her more movement but this time she is also weighted. She weights a little over 1.3 kilos (almost 3 pounds).

Now let me tell you a little about Alondra. As you can already tell, she sleeps a lot. I dare to say that sleeping is her favorite thing in the whole wide world. She’s very young and well, she needs her sleep to grow. She sometimes giggles in her sleep and grabs toys, blankets, and even my hair while she sleeps. She literally only wakes up to drink her formula and is not interested in food at all, at least at the moment. Alondra loves Christmas Carols and sometimes you can keep her awake longer if she’s looking at twinkling lights. She loves the Christmas Tree. I made her a Christmas outfit thinking of how much she seems to like everything Christmassy. I guess most babies do. The colors, the lights, the music, the smells…what’s not to love?

Alondra- 18 inch Natural Fibers Doll

Alondra is an 18 inch natural fibers art baby doll. She’s fully soft sculpted and anatomically correct. Her skin is Heavy Weight Laib Yala in light brown color, her limbs are fully lined and firmly filled with clean wool and glass beads. Her torso is needle felted in two parts and weighted with glass beads. Her head is floppy, just like a real newborn baby and needs to be supported at all times.  Her arms and legs have been hand sewn to her torso three times to make it extra strong. They are very floppy as well and bend at the elbow, thighs, and knees. Her head is firmly needle felted and soft sculpted in the mouth and eyes. Alondra’s hair is a hand crocheted wild brushable red brown mohair cap that has been hand sewn to her head. You can gently brush and restyle this kind of hair. Her blushing has been made with chalk pastels.

Alondra is not a toy. She’s an art doll intended for gentle play by an adult collector or an older child 10 and up. She likes to be cuddled and held but just like you would be gentle with a newborn baby, you need to be gentle with her. She’s easy and fun to pose and feels great to hold too.
