Fig, a mushroom whisperer.

Nature alone is antique, and the oldest art a mushroom.

-Thomas Carlyle

This has been the month of the mushrooms for sure. For some reason I can’t take mushrooms off my head. I already made 3 simple baby mushrooms for sale, a tiny mushroom for V’s birthday, and Fig, a more elaborated mushroom whisperer doll. Do you know what a mushroom whisperer is? Let me explain.

Fig is not actually a mushroom. He’s a gnome. One that will have a very important job very soon. He helps mushrooms grow. You see when rain falls in a warm place, these little fellas whisper at the soil, around the trees, grass, and fallen leaves. They send magical sounds that awakens life around these things. This new life they awaken in the form of mushrooms is what decomposes organic debris and cycles all the nutrients back to the soil. This will then help other plants grow.

So you see, Fig will have a very important job. However, right now, he’s just a baby and it’s still a little rusty with his whispering. He has grown more fungus on himself than on the ground. And while he is till learning is better to keep him inside where he cannot make many things grow, or not. I guess you will meet him and decide what works better for you and him. But I must warn you, if you plan to let him go inside the house make sure he wears the diaper I made him. We had a couple of accidents already. Outside it’s ok, he likes to only wear his hat and collar though and we let him.

Some of Figs favorite things are playing outside, especially after the rain. Sleeping in warm damp corners. playing hide and seek and peek a boo. eating nuts, and snuggling with his acorn plushie.

Baby Fig is an almost 8 inch natural fibers baby boy doll. His skin is organic cotton interlock in it’s natural color. His big spots have been painted with fabric paint. His freckles were painted with a micron pen. His limbs and torso are firmly filled with clean wool. His head is not floppy but a little wobbly. His legs and arms are floppy on the shoulders and thighs. Arms are sewn directly to the torso three times for extra strength. Legs and torso are one piece. His face is firmly needle felted, soft sculpted, and hand embroidered with DMC cotton embroidery floss. Baby Fig’s hair is a wild brushable mohair wig cap in red brown. It has been sewn to his head. This hair can be gently brushed and styled. The emboridery on his body has also been made with DMC cotton floss.. He has low gnome ears sewn to his head. He has a cute belly button and tushie. His blushing was made with an orange/red beeswax crayon and it is not permanent. You will get a little piece of cloth with some blush so you can retouch it if necessary.

Baby Fig is not a toy. He’s an art doll intended for gentle play by an adult collector or an older child 10 and up. He likes to play and cuddle and even though he is made as sturdy as possible, you need to be gentle with him like you would be with a real baby.

Hand wash only.

Baby Fig will go home with his diaper, a hand crocheted mushroom hat, a cotton lace collar with snaps, and his acorn plushie. All items made by me. I will be making him a simple blanket to wrap him so he doesn’t get cold while traveling.
