Only bugs can really appreciate the beauty of flowers.

Mariela, 13.5 natural fibers doll

Meet Mariela, my new cuddly baby. I think this is what I’m going to call this style of baby because they are oh so cuddly and floppy. I love them so much. This time, I of course, change a couple of things with this baby. I made her hands a little smaller and I actually love how they look now. I also made her feet shorter but for some reason they came out wider. They actually remind me of my little boy’s feet, he has rectangular chubby feet. and I find them very cute. I guess each baby is different and those differences is what makes each one of them unique. Mariela is no exception.

Mariela is a special little one that loves bugs. Yes, you read right, a little girl that loves bugs. Mariela is fascinated by them. She is also super careful with them. You should see how gentle she is with ants and grasshopers. I guess she is scared of squishing them. Her favorite kind of bug is, well, I think you already know, ladybugs of course. She loves all colors of ladybugs: red, orange, yellow, even green. I think the little dots is what catches her eye. I sometimes wonder what is she thinking of when she stares at them. She is very interested in bugs you know, but she is also a tiny baby that sleeps most of the day. Near the window when it is raining is her favorite spot. We discovered early on that the sound of rains soothes her and helps her fall asleep even faster.

Because of her apparent love of ladybugs I decided to turn her into one. Of course, only as a costume. That way we could take the cutest newborn photos and we did. I also went for a whole normal outfit with the same theme, because why not?

Mariela is a 13.5 inch natural fibers art baby doll. She is fully soft sculpted and anatomically correct. Her skin is Laib Yala in dark brown. Her whole body is fully lined and mostly stuffed with glass beads, which means she is weighted. She only has wool on her toes, hands, belly and buttocks. That is why she is so floppy. Her head is floppy. Her arms have been hand sewn to her torso three times to make it extra strong. They are floppy as well. Her head is firmly needle felted and soft sculpted in the mouth and eyes. Bian has no hair and this is on purpose. This is a technique I want to practice as much as possible at the moment so you will probably see a lot of bald dolls or whith very little hair in the future. Her blushing has been made with colored pencils, chalk pastels, and a red bees wax crayon. It is not permanent and it can be refreshed with a crayon, chalk pastels, or make up.

Mariela is not a toy. She’s an art doll intended for gentle play by an adult collector or an older child 10 and up. She likes to play and cuddle but you need to be gentle with her like you would be with a real newborn baby.
