Greta, an early Christmas Baby

To kindness and love, the things we need most!

-The Grinch

Christmas season has started in my studio! I know it is early, but I want to be prepared because I do have many Christmas babies planned this year. Not sure I will be able to make them all but whatever I don’t make this year, I will save for next.

Now to the important part of this post. Meet Greta, this year’s Whoville’s contribution to La Chulona. She came early and full of joy like most Whos do. Why do they send me these babies you might ask? Well, because in Whoville green furry babies have a hard time growing up. People don’t understand them and often times make fun of them, especially children that still might not understand how some jokes can be hurtful. You might know the story of the first baby of this kind to arrive in Whoville. He grew up to be not a very pleasant Who and most of it was because he was treated to badly when he was a kid. The thing is he nearly ruined Christmas one year. He regret it and now every one loves him so he is a happy fella. However to avoid things like this to happen again they now send me the green furry babies so they can be adopted into homes that will love them as they are and will cherish them and their love for Christmas. They can always come back to Whoville when they are older of course. Christmas magic will show them the way.

Greta is still a newborn so she spends most of the time sleeping. She is very girly girl that loves tutus, bows, ruffles, and the colors red, white, and pink. She loves the smell of pine trees and peppermint. Her favorite animals are dogs and reindeers and she sleeps the best to the sound of Christmas Carols. When she is awake, Greta is a very curious baby that seems to be taking note of how everything works around her. I have been told these Whos are pretty smart and turn very resourceful when they are older.

Greta is a 11 inch natural fibers art baby doll. Her skin is organic cotton interlock hand dyed to a green color. His whole body is fully lined and mostly stuffed with glass beads for weight. She only has wool on her toes, hands, belly and buttocks. That is why she is so floppy. Her head is also floppy. Her arms have been hand sewn to her torso three times to make it extra strong. They are floppy as well. Her head is firmly needle felted and soft sculpted in the mouth, nose, and eyes. She has long cotton floss eyelashes. Greta’s hair is wild brushable mohair crocheted and dyed to green. The hair on the wrists, ankles, and neck are tied in place and the hair on the head is hand sewn to the head. Her nose has been colored with a wet colored pencil. Her blushing is made with chalk pastels and it is not permanent but can easily retouched with crayons, makeup, chalk pastels or beeswax crayon. I will be sending a piece of cloth with beeswax crayon so you can touch up her blushing if you wish to.

Greta is not a toy. She’s an art doll intended for gentle play by an adult collector or an older child 10 and up. She likes to play and cuddle but you need to be gentle with her like you would be with a real newborn baby.

Greta will go home with most of the clothes and accessories you see in her photos. All handmade by me.
