Milagro, a sweet calaverita

Celebrate life through remembrance

Milagro, 10 inch natural fibers art baby doll

One more creepy cutie has been born in my studio. I have never been a fan of Halloween but ever since I started making dolls, I love this season because I get to take the creepy dolls and turn them in to cute little babies.

Even though I’m not a big fan of Halloween, Día de Muertos is definitely one of my favorite festivities, especially since I moved to Mexico.

Some of you already know of my love for Mexico. I was not born in this country but I feel a deep connection to it. Like I was meant to be here. Mexico turned out to be the home I didn’t know I missed. And Day of the Dead is one of the reasons I fell even more in love with this place. Mexican people is my kind of people. They are positive, hard working, inventive, creative, motivated people. Mexicans can find the beauty even in death. Is not that they don’t mourn their dead, they do, but they also have a specific day every year, to celebrate them, to remember them and welcome them back into their homes. I am not a religious person, but I love the meaning and all the magical feeling of this day, the energy it brings to our home when we prepare our “ofrenda”, the way my kids can see, talk, and hear stories about the family that is no longer with us. All of that is priceless and brings me so much joy and nostalgia. I hope you can all experience, at least once, this day with someone that celebrates it like Mexicans do. It is truly magical.

I also read somewhere that the Day of the Dead skeletons reminds us that we are all the same on the inside. I feel that is so powerful and needed right now. I feel there is so much division in the world at the moment. I’m hoping for unity even when it doesn’t look very promising. Maybe that is why I named this baby Milagro. She is the miracle I guess I am hoping for.

Now please meet Milagro, the sweetest calaverita (sugar skull) you will ever meet. Milagro is small but has enough weight to make her feel like a baby. She loves to cuddle and play with imaginary friends. I mean, she says they are here but I don’t see them. Maybe she is more sensitive to these things, or maybe she just has a big imagination. who knows? She loves pan de muerto, oranges, and flowers, especially marigolds. She is very attracted to candles and you need to be careful because she wants to touch the flame. She has almost burned her hands twice already. She giggles a lot and moves to the sound of music, especially Mexican upbeat music. Nevertheles, she has a very calm and positive aura about her. It’s like she knows that life is beautiful even after death.

Milagro is a 10 inch natural fibers baby doll. Her skin is Organic Cotton Interlock in its natural color. Her whole body is fully lined and mostly stuffed with glass beads. This is the first time I make a skeleton baby with weight. She only has wool on her toes, hands, and belly. That is why she is so floppy. Her head is floppy. Her arms have been hand sewn to her torso three times to make it extra strong. They are floppy as well. Her head is firmly needle felted, soft sculpted, hand painted with fabric paint, decorated with wool felt, and hand embroidered with cotton embroidery floss. Her body is also hand painted with fabric paint. Please note that painting is not my forte, the painting is imperfect but done as carefully as I can, just like all my dolls, imperfectly perfect.

If you would like to see more photos of Milagro, you can see them here.

This baby is not a toy. This is an art doll intended for gentle play by an adult collector or an older child 10 and up. Milagro likes to play and cuddle and even though it was made as sturdy as possible, you need to be gentle with it like you would be with a real baby.

Spot clean only.

Milagro will go home with only her flower head band and her ghost baby doll. I will also be making her a little crochet cocoon so she can travel comfortably.
