A prickly baby

Life is like a cactus. Thorny but beautiful.

How is summer vacation treating you? I hope you are enjoying it!

I haven’t really started my vacation yet. I still have 9 more days of work before I go on my break. This year I’ll be taking a whole month. I haven’t done that in a very long time. So I have a mix of excitement and anxiety. I still have a couple of things to finish before I go because I am basically working double to be able to take next month off. But I am not complaining, I am enjoying the things I am working on. Like this whimsical little cutie.

Meet Prickly, my new cactus baby girl. I wanted to make a plant but I wasn’t really feeling the flowers and while watching Encanto with my kids, I got inspired with the scene were Isabella makes a cactus by mistake. She calls it “not symmetrical, nor perfect, but it’s beautiful”, and that sounded just like what I needed. So that is how my sweet thorn covered baby came to life.

Please meet Prickly. Prickly was born in the middle of the “Soblonke” park near our house. We went for a walk and suddenly heard some crying. We didn’t pay attention because we thought it was someone else’s baby. However, when we let our dog run around she went inside some bushes and the crying became louder. We could tell the crying was coming from there. I first thought someone abandoned a baby, so I ran to see. And that is where I saw this sweet baby on the floor crying, a bunch of cactus around her pulled from the ground, including her. I guess someone pulled them out and probably got surprised when one of the cactus cried and left them all behind. We were all so amazed to find something so unique. We dug a hole and tried to plant her again, but every time we would walk away she would start crying again. So we ended up taking her home with us. I made her a pot and a soil blanket and she is happy indoors, next to a sunny window with some other fellow cacti. Since we are going in a long vacation we are trying to find her a home so she is not alone so long. She likes to have people and animals around.

If you feel you would be a good parent to Prickly you should know that she loves the sun, does not drink a lot of water, and it is a very low maintenance baby. Even though she is covered in spikes, they are very soft because she is still a baby. I am not sure if they are going to harden as she ages, She loves insects, birds, and rodents. Becareful because if you let her she will hide them and keep them cozy between her limbs forever.

Prickly is an 8 inch baby cactus. Her skin is organic cotton interlock hand dyed to a green color. The embroidery on her face and body was made with DMC thread. Spikes are made with seing threads. This doll is fully lined. Stuffed with mostly glass beads for weight and some wool on feet, hands, and buttocks. The head was made in the classic Waldorf style and then completely needle felting to make it firmer. Mouth is soft sculpted, and eyebrows are made with DMC cotton embroidery floss. Her hair is a wild brushable mohair hand dyed to pink, then hand sewn to her buns. You can gently brush it. The doll has a soft sculpted bum. Blushing was made with chalk pastels and it is not permanent. You will get a little piece of cloth with some blush so you can retouch it if necessary.

Prickly will go home with the following clothes and accessories, all handmade by me:

  • Hand crocheted cotton and wool round blanket
  • Hand crocheted cotton flower pot
  • Hand made tiny bird

This doll is not a toy. This is an art doll meant for adult collectors or for older children 10 and up that can play with her gently so you don’t prickle your fingers.
