And the first baby of the year is finally ready. This time I started with a doll I have been wanted to make for a while now. A Strawberry Inspired baby doll. I know she doesn’t look too much lik ethe original strawberry doll but I actually was inspired by the Blow Kiss Strawberry Shortcake babies from the early 80s. I used to have one of those when I was little and I still think it was such a cute doll. Of course, I made my version of her, not the exact doll and I think it does resemble her. I hope you do too.

I gave her deep red hair, a cute freckled face with bright blue eyes and a little kissy mouth. I based her romper on the original romper the doll I had was wearing. Of course my version is a little different and includes some hand painted strawberries and embroidered ones as well. I also couldn’t resist to make her a cute straberry hat and booties and this time I went with knitted accessories, which are more difficult to make (at least for me) but that much more cute, in my opinion. Strawberry Shortcake is not complete without her pet Custard. So I decided to make her a pink cat doll, just like the one the character has.

I named this baby Rosita Fresita because that is the translation here in Mexico. I never heard it back in Puerto Rico. I guess we are so americanized we just say “Strawberry Shortcake” but with a Puerto Rican accent. hahaha! I like the name Rosita Fresita which would translate to little pink strawberry, or little strawberry rose. I think both meanings are cute and since I love to give hispanic names to my babies, this name seemed like a no brainer for me.

Rosita is a very sweet girl that actually prefers sweets than salty food. She loves to help in the kitchen, especially when it is time to bake. She loves it the most when we add fruits to what we are baking.

Rosita is also very into gardening. Playing with dirt is one of her favorite things. She loves fruits, especially berries, and as you can probably tell, strawberries are her favorites and she would love to grow them I’m sure. However, strawberries don’t grow in this weather. We still get her some from the grocery store though.

I have a feeling Rosita will be a very good cook and gardener when she gets older and she will help a lot in the kitchen. It’s like her eyes get brighter whenever she is helping, even though she is doing very simple stuff like squeezing bananas or strawberries, playing with dirt in the garden, or pouring some cream over a cake. Everything is still a little messy but I have no doubt it will get better in time.

Rosita is a 10 inch natural fibers art baby doll. She’s not fully soft sculpted but she has a cute belly button and bum. Her skin is heavy weight Laib Yala fabric in dark peach. Her whole body is fully lined and mostly stuffed with glass beads. She only has wool on her toes, hands, belly and buttocks. That is why she is so floppy. Her head is floppy. Her arms have been hand sewn to her torso three times to make it extra strong. They are floppy as well. Her head is firmly needle felted and soft sculpted in the mouth. Her blue eyes have been hand embroidered with DMC thread, Rosita’s hair is a hand crocheted wild brushable mohair wig that has been hand sewn to her head. Her blushing has been made with an orange red bees wax crayon. It is not permanent and it can be refreshed with a crayon.

Rosita is not a toy. She’s an art doll intended for gentle play by an adult collector or an older child 10 and up. She likes to play and cuddle but you need to be gentle with her like you would be with a real newborn baby.
