Fairy babies

Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.

-Roald Dahl

We haven’t seen fairies around here for quiet some time. I was already thinking maybe I lost it, maybe I can’t see fairies anymore, maybe I have grown too old to believe in fairies. But a week ago as I was walking the dog around the park I saw a shimmer in the bushes. I walked closer and I saw a little pod with some shimmering wings coming out of it. I immediately knew it was a fairy. They usually sleep on top of the trees but I guess the wind had blown the pod off the tree. I was happy to see that the tiny fairy inside was ok and still sleeping. So I took him home and started taking care of him. I named him Gren and made him some tiny clothes with some left over fabric and yarn. Tiny clothes are hard to make, let me say. I ruined two pairs of pants until I finally got them right. I made him a little friend so he could sleep better inside my studio at the top of my shelves, where my cat can’t reach. I thought I was so lucky to find the one fairy. Little did I know a couple of days later my kids found a second fairy hanging very low from a tree at the park. It was a very windy day so I guess that is why the pods kept falling. Now I keep my eyes open every time we go outside and I’m happy to say I found a third pod with a baby almost out of the pod. Don’t worry the fairy is ok. Now the problem is that I have three baby fairies at home that I cannot properly take care of. That means, they will be looking for a home today. I hope you love these sweet fairies as much as I do.

Gliss, Briar, and Gren, 4 inch baby fairies

I haven’t made fairies in a log time and I haven’t made this pattern since 2018. I made this pattern for an Instagram challenge and I made a mushroom fairy with it. After that fairy, I put this pattern away and never made it again, until now.

Every time I start making tiny dolls I feel like I will save so much time with them because they are so little. However, the opposite often happens. I spend much more time in these because I end up hand sewing most of the doll and clothes because the seams are so tiny. Sewing them on a sewing machine would be much more difficult, at least for me.

Since I was doing something new and. magical, I also decided to do some experimenting with these babies. Why not? I dyed their skin after the doll was made to try to get a degrading effect. That did not work out and I got more of a Batik effect, which is also beautiful and it still worked for these babies. Another thing I wanted to try was embroidering some 3D wings. This was very very time consuming and even though they are a little rough on the edges, I love the rough edges as I feel they give the doll more character and a more organic feel.

I guess I have been writing too much, so let me introduce you to these magical beings.

Gren, 4 inch fairy baby doll

Meet Gren, the first baby I discovered at the park. He sleeps a lot because, well, that is what most fairy babies do. They only wake up to eat (nectar and natural fruit juices) and then they go back to sleep. Every now and then you should clean their diapers too. In the wild they kind of get cleaned somehow, but at home you need to keep an eye on that. Gren likes to fall asleep inside the palm of hands but afterwards you can put him in his pod and he will sleep all night and day with no problem. He’s a good sleeper. His favorite fruit juice is green apple juice but he also enjoys any other sweet and or sour fruit.

Baby Gren is a little over 4 inches and he is a natural fibers baby fairy doll. Skin is Heavy weight Laib Yala had dyed to a green color. Gren’s hair is a hand crocheted brown wild brushable mohair wig cap, hand sewn to his head. This hair can be gently brushed.

Gren will go home with a cloth diaper, a handmade pair of shorts with just one crossed suspender, a hand crocheted hat and leg warmers, a hand crocheted sleeping pod, and his snail friend.

Second we have Briar. Even though Briar sleeps a lot as well, she seems to also dream a lot and is very vocal in her dreams, I mean, I can’t understand anything but she seems very expressive. More than once I thought she was woken up, but no, she was just dreaming. I hope is mostly good dreams though. Briar is a little bit of a fuzzy sleeper. She sleeps a lot but she needs to feel you close. I have been taking her to our room to sleep and it has worked as a charm. What is Briar favorite juice? Well, strawbery and lemon juice,

Baby Briar is a little over 4 inches and she is a natural fibers baby fairy doll. Skin is Heavy weight Laib Yala had dyed to a pink color. Briar’s hair is a hand crocheted wild brushable mohair wig cap, hand dyed to a green color and hand sewn to her head. This hair can be gently brushed.

Briar will go home with a simple cloth diaper, hand crocheted hat and leg warmers, white dress with flower petals (the dress needs to be taken off and put on from the bottom so it does not get stuck on the wings), a crocheted pod to sleep in, and her little snail friend.

Finally we have Gliss. This might be the little rebel in the family. She sleeps a lot of course, but from the three, she is the one that sleeps the less. She loves to get out of her pod to look at new things, the problem is she usually falls asleep while exploring, so you need to keep a close eye on her. At night I put a basket over her pod to stop her from going far. It has worked so far but who knows for how long it will. Gliss’ favorite juices are blueberry and raspberry juice.

Baby Gliss is a little over 4 inches and she is a natural fibers baby fairy doll. Skin is Heavy weight Laib Yala had dyed to a light blue color. Gliss’ hair is a hand crocheted small loop mohair pink wig cap that has been hand sewn to her head. This hair cannot be brushed.

Gliss will go home with a cloth diaper, lace shorts with suspenders (this was supposed to be a skirt but she was very clear she wanted shorts), crocheted hat and leg warmers, hand crocheted sleeping pod, and her snail friend.

All these babies have sparkly freckles painted with fabric paint. ( they are hard to capture on photos) The brown freckles were painted with a micron pen. Limbs and torso are filled with clean wool. Head is very floppy . Legs and arms are floppy on the shoulders and thighs. This is a string jointed doll. The limbs are attached to the body with upholstery thread for better movement. The head was made in the classic Waldorf style with some needle felting to make it firmer. Mouth is soft sculpted, and eyes are hand embroidered with DMC cotton embroidery floss. Fairy ears are hand sewn to the head. The dolls have a soft sculpted belly buttons and bums. Their hand embroidered wings have been coated with shimmery fabric paint and they are hand sewn to their backs. Blushing was made with beeswax crayons and it is not permanent. You will get a little piece of cloth with some blush so you can retouch it if necessary.

If you would like to see more photos of the fairies, you can do so here.

These babies are spot clean only due to the fabric dye.

These dolls are not toys. These are art dolls meant for adult collectors or for older children 10 and up that can play with them gently. Fairies are delicate beings so they need to be treated with a lot of care.
